Bates Hori

Studio.Bates Hori is a visual research and design studio in New York where form/behavior/context and meaning happily coalesce, sometimes brightly.
Allen Hori – Founder and principal, lover of French Bulldogs and all things growing.
Allen Hori is a designer dedicated to the poetics of graphic design and communication, willingly and pragmatically pursues the resultant incongruities and surprising tangents of fancy.
His experience covers a diverse range of clients from corporate, fashion, music, culture, art and publishing industries. As a Creative Director at BIG (Ogilvy & Mather Brand Integration Group)
he has led collaborative teams of designers, writers, architects, brand strategists on projects with clients including Johnson & Johnson, DoubleClick, Kodak and Ford.

The studio’s process of extensive research and exploration critically balances the cleaving relationship of words and images, and, the fluid conceit of design and photography as practice and play. Allen’s work has earned recognition from New York Type Directors, AIGA, American Center for Design, I.D. Magazine, Emigré, Eye, IDEA, Studio Voice, and has appeared in many domestic and foreign exhibitions and publications. He was named an I.D. Top Forty Influential Designer and has lectured widely at design schools and professional symposia.

Allen is on the graduate faculty in Graphic Design at Yale University School of Art and a past Frank Stanton Chair in Graphic Design at The Cooper Union School of Art.
BFA Photography/University of Hawaii, MFA Design/Cranbrook Academy of Art, Fulbright Grant for Study Abroad/Netherlands.
